If you are a tradie trying to figure out where to spend your time online, you are not alone. Every platform is telling you that you need to be there. TikTok says you need to go viral. LinkedIn says you need to network. YouTube says you need to start a channel. The reality is much simpler than that.

Here is a platform-by-platform breakdown of what actually matters for tradies in Australia, based on where your customers are and what generates real enquiries.

Facebook (Still King for Lead Gen)

Facebook has over 17 million active users in Australia. The demographic that matters most to tradies, homeowners aged 35 to 55, is the most active group on the platform. These are the people making decisions about renovations, extensions, new builds, and property upgrades.

For organic content, Facebook is decent. Your business page gives you a place to post project photos, share updates, and build a presence. But the real power of Facebook for tradies is paid advertising. Meta's ad platform lets you target homeowners by location, age, interests, and behaviour. You can put your business in front of people in specific suburbs who are actively thinking about the type of work you do.

Facebook is not optional. If you are only going to invest in one platform, this is it.

Instagram (Your Visual Portfolio)

Instagram is where people go to browse visual content, and trades are inherently visual. A beautifully tiled bathroom, a freshly landscaped backyard, a polished concrete driveway. This is the kind of content that performs well on Instagram without you needing to try hard.

Stories and Reels are where the engagement lives now. A quick behind-the-scenes clip of the boys on site, a time-lapse of a pour, a walkthrough of a finished job. These formats get more reach than static posts and they show the human side of your business.

Instagram also works well as a portfolio. When a homeowner is deciding between three quotes, they will often check your Instagram to see your work. If your page is empty or has not been updated in six months, that is not a great look.

The bonus with Instagram is that it runs on the same ad platform as Facebook. When you run Meta ads, you can show them on both platforms simultaneously. Two birds, one stone.

TikTok (Great for Brand, Not for Leads)

TikTok is the platform everyone asks about. And yes, some tradies have built massive followings on it. Process videos, satisfying reveals, day-in-the-life content. It can be entertaining and it can get you a lot of eyeballs.

The problem is that eyeballs do not equal enquiries. TikTok's audience skews younger. The people watching your tiling video are often other tradies, apprentices, or people in their twenties who are renting, not homeowners looking to hire someone for a $30,000 renovation.

"Going viral on TikTok feels great. But if the people watching are not your buyers, it does not matter how many views you get."

If you genuinely enjoy making content and want to build a personal brand, TikTok can be fun. But do not confuse it with a lead generation strategy. It is not one. Not for project-based trades.

YouTube (The Long Game)

YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, and it is a powerful trust-building tool. A homeowner who watches a 10-minute video of you explaining the renovation process is going to feel like they already know you before you even show up to quote.

The challenge with YouTube is that it is slow. Building an audience takes months or years. The production quality expectations are higher than other platforms. And for most tradies who are flat out on the tools, finding time to film and edit long-form content is not realistic.

YouTube is a long-term play. If you have the capacity, it is worth investing in. But it should not be your first priority if you need leads now.

Google Business Profile (Not Social, But Essential)

Google Business Profile is not technically a social media platform, but it needs to be mentioned because it is one of the most neglected marketing assets for tradies. When someone searches "renovator near me" or "plumber Bayside Melbourne," your GBP listing is what shows up in the map results.

Fill it out completely. Add photos every week. Respond to every review. Post updates regularly. It is free, it takes five minutes, and it directly impacts whether homeowners find you when they are actively searching for your trade.

Most tradies set up their GBP once and never touch it again. That is a missed opportunity. Treat it like a social platform that you update regularly.

LinkedIn (Skip It)

Unless you are doing commercial or B2B work, LinkedIn is a waste of time for tradies. Your customers are not on LinkedIn looking for someone to renovate their kitchen. They are on Facebook and Instagram.

If you are a builder who does commercial fit-outs or a company targeting property developers, LinkedIn has a role. For residential, project-based trades, skip it entirely.

The Verdict

Here is the simple version. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) for paid lead generation. Google Business Profile for local visibility and search. Everything else is optional.

$25/day

The ad spend one LVRG client uses to generate a consistent flow of qualified leads through Meta ads

You do not need to be on every platform. You do not need to go viral. You need a system that puts your business in front of the right homeowners, in the right suburbs, at the right time. That is what paid Meta ads with a proper funnel does. One of our clients generates leads at $57 each on just $25 a day. No TikTok dances required.

Focus your energy where it counts. The rest is noise.
