Most tradie websites are terrible. Not because the tradies are bad at what they do, but because nobody ever told them what a website is supposed to do. It is not a digital brochure. It is not a place to list your ABN and a stock photo of a hammer. It is a tool that turns strangers into enquiries. And if it is not doing that, it is costing you money.
Here is how to build a website for your trade business that actually works.
What Pages You Actually Need
You do not need 30 pages. You need five that do their job properly.
Homepage. This is where most visitors land, and it needs to answer three questions in the first five seconds: what you do, where you do it, and why someone should choose you over the next bloke. Your phone number should be visible. A contact form should be above the fold. Do not make people scroll to find out how to reach you.
Services page. List the specific types of work you do. If you are a renovator, break it down: bathroom renovations, kitchen renovations, full home renovations, extensions. Each service should have its own section or page. This helps with SEO and it helps homeowners understand exactly what you offer.
About page. People want to know who is turning up to their house. Put your photo on there. Tell your story. How long you have been in the trade, why you started your business, who the boys are. This is not vanity. This is trust-building.
Gallery. Before and after photos of your work. This is the most powerful page on your site. Homeowners want to see what you can do, not read about it. Real photos of real jobs. Not stock images.
Contact page. Phone number, contact form, service areas. Make it dead simple to get in touch.
Mobile First (Your Customers Are on Their Phones)
Over 70 percent of traffic to tradie websites comes from mobile devices. That is not a guess. That is what we see across every client we work with. The homeowner searching for "renovator near me" is doing it from their phone while standing in the bathroom they want ripped out.
Of tradie website traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site is not mobile-friendly, you are losing the majority of your visitors.
If your website is not easy to use on a phone, you are losing most of your visitors before they even read a word. The phone number should be tappable. The navigation should be simple. The form should be easy to fill out with a thumb. Pages should not scroll sideways or have text so small you need to pinch and zoom.
Test your website on your own phone right now. If it is frustrating to use, imagine how a potential customer feels.
Speed Kills (Slow Sites Lose Leads)
If your website takes more than three seconds to load, people leave. They do not wait. They hit the back button and go to the next tradie on Google. You have lost that lead before your site even finished loading.
The most common reasons tradie websites are slow: massive uncompressed images, cheap hosting, bloated website builders loaded with plugins. A photo from your phone might be 5MB. On a website, it should be under 200KB. That single change can cut your load time in half.
Speed is also a Google ranking factor. Slow sites get pushed down in search results. Fast sites get rewarded. It is not just about user experience. It directly affects whether people find you in the first place.
Every Page Needs a Call to Action
Every single page on your website should make it obvious what the visitor should do next. Call you. Fill out a form. Request a quote. It does not matter which page they land on, there should always be a clear next step.
"If a homeowner lands on your website and cannot figure out how to contact you in five seconds, you have already lost them."
The biggest mistake tradies make is burying the contact form at the bottom of the page. Put it in the hero section at the top. Put your phone number in the header. Add a call-to-action button at the end of every section. Make it impossible to miss.
A sticky phone button on mobile is essential. The homeowner should be able to tap and call you from anywhere on the site without scrolling back to the top.
Forms vs Phone Numbers (Use Both)
Some people want to call. They are ready right now, they want to talk to someone, and they want to book a time. Give them a phone number that is easy to find and easy to tap.
Other people do not want to call. They are browsing at 10pm, the missus has just said she wants the bathroom done, and they want to send a quick enquiry without picking up the phone. Give them a form.
You need both. If you only have a phone number, you lose the people who prefer to type. If you only have a form, you lose the people who are ready to talk right now. Both conversion paths should be on every page, especially the homepage.
Why Template Sites Often Do Not Convert
Wix, Squarespace, and generic website builders are fine for a cafe or a portfolio site. For a trade business that needs to generate leads, they often fall short.
The problem is not that they look bad. Some of them look great. The problem is that they are not built for lead generation. The templates are designed to look pretty, not to convert visitors into enquiries. The forms are basic. The page structure does not follow conversion best practices. The phone number is not prominent. There is no urgency, no social proof in the right places, no clear reason to choose you over the next bloke.
A template site is better than no site. But if you are spending money on ads or SEO to drive traffic to your website, you want that traffic to convert. A generic template site with a 1 percent conversion rate means you are wasting 99 percent of your ad spend.
What a High-Converting Tradie Website Looks Like
A website that actually generates leads for a trade business has a few things in common, regardless of the trade.
The phone number is visible on every page, in the header, and it is tappable on mobile. There is a contact form above the fold on the homepage, not buried at the bottom. Before and after photos of real work are prominent, not hidden in a gallery page nobody visits. There are reviews or testimonials visible on the homepage. The suburbs and areas you service are mentioned clearly. And there is a compelling reason to choose you, whether that is your experience, your guarantee, your process, or your results.

Your website does not need to win a design award. It needs to make the phone ring. Every design decision, every word of copy, every button and form should serve that single purpose. Give homeowners a reason to trust you, make it easy to contact you, and get out of the way.
Because the tradie with the best website does not always do the best work. But they are the one who gets the call.
