When a homeowner needs a tradie, the first thing they do is search. "Plumber near me." "Bathroom renovator Bayside Melbourne." "Concreter south east suburbs." If your business does not show up when they search, you do not exist to them. Simple as that.

SEO, search engine optimisation, is how you make sure you show up. And the good news is that the basics are not complicated. Most tradies are just not doing them.

Start With Google Business Profile

If you do nothing else from this article, do this. Set up and fully complete your Google Business Profile. It is free, it takes about 30 minutes, and it is the single most impactful thing you can do for local search visibility.

When someone searches for your trade in your area, Google shows a map pack at the top of the results. Those three businesses in the map pack get the majority of clicks. Your Google Business Profile is what determines whether you show up there.

Fill out every single field. Your business name, address, phone number, service area, hours, services offered, and description. Add photos of your work every week. Post updates regularly. The more complete and active your profile is, the more Google trusts it.

"Your Google Business Profile is the front door of your business online. Most tradies set it up once and never touch it again. That is why they do not show up."

Most tradies we talk to either do not have a GBP at all, or they set it up three years ago and have not touched it since. Meanwhile, their competitors are adding photos, collecting reviews, and showing up in every local search. It is not that Google is playing favourites. It is that the other bloke is actually putting in the effort.

Local Keywords (Suburb + Trade)

When it comes to your website, the biggest mistake tradies make is being too generic. Your homepage says "quality plumbing services" but it does not mention a single suburb. Google does not know where you work, so it does not show you to people searching in your area.

Local keywords are how you fix that. Instead of "plumber," think "plumber Bayside Melbourne." Instead of "bathroom renovations," think "bathroom renovations Brighton." You want your trade plus your suburb or region on your key pages.

This does not mean stuffing your pages with suburb names until they read like a phone book. It means naturally mentioning the areas you service in your headings, page content, and meta descriptions. If you service 10 suburbs, mention the main ones. Create service area pages if you can.

Reviews Are Your SEO Superpower

Google reviews do two things. They build trust with homeowners, and they boost your local search rankings. Businesses with more reviews and higher ratings show up higher in the map pack. It is that straightforward.

The tradies who dominate local search are the ones who ask every happy customer for a review. Not occasionally. Every single time. Send them a link after you finish the job, while the experience is still fresh. Most happy customers are glad to help, they just need to be asked.

Respond to every review, positive or negative. Google sees that you are engaged. Homeowners see that you care. A thoughtful response to a negative review can actually build more trust than a five-star rating with no replies.

Website Fundamentals That Matter

Your website does not need to be fancy. It needs to be fast, mobile-friendly, and clear about what you do and where you do it.

Mobile first. Over 70 percent of tradie website traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site is not easy to use on a phone, you are losing leads. The phone number should be tappable. The form should be easy to fill out with a thumb. The pages should load fast.

Speed matters more than most tradies realise. If your site takes more than three seconds to load, homeowners leave. They go to the next bloke on Google. A slow site is not just a bad experience, it is a ranking factor. Google actively penalises slow sites.

Make sure your suburb names appear in your page titles, headings, and content. Have a clear services page that lists what you do. Have an about page that shows who you are. Have a gallery that shows your work. And have a contact page with your phone number and a form.

DIY vs Hiring an SEO Agency

The basics we have covered here, GBP, reviews, local keywords, mobile-friendly site, are things you can and should do yourself. They are free or close to it, and they make a real difference.

Paid SEO services, where an agency optimises your site, builds backlinks, and creates content, can work. But it takes time. Most legitimate SEO agencies will tell you that results take three to six months minimum. If someone promises you page one in two weeks, they are either lying or using tactics that will get your site penalised.

The challenge for most tradies is that three to six months is a long time to wait when things are quiet and the boys need work. That is where the combination approach comes in.

How SEO and Paid Ads Work Together

The smartest approach is to run both. Use paid Meta ads to generate leads immediately while you build your SEO presence over time. Ads give you control and predictability right now. SEO gives you a compounding asset that reduces your cost per lead over time.

One of our clients runs Meta ads on $25 a day and generates leads at $57 each. Those leads started coming in within the first 15 days. That is the kind of speed you need when payroll is due on Friday.

Meanwhile, they are also building their GBP, collecting reviews, and improving their website. Over time, organic enquiries will increase, and their dependence on paid ads will decrease. But they did not have to wait six months with an empty calendar to get there.

"SEO is a long-term investment. Paid ads are an immediate pipeline. The tradies who win run both."

Start with the basics. Get your GBP sorted, ask for reviews, make sure your site mentions your suburbs. Then layer paid ads on top for immediate results. That is the combination that fills calendars and builds sustainable trade businesses.
